The petition alleges that engine coolant intrusion results in a significant loss of engine power, accompanied by an "Engine Coolant Over Temperature" warning message. The petition further alleges that after the vehicle has sat and cooled down, the engine runs roughly and generates a check engine light for a cylinder misfire. On July 22, 2022, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) granted a Defect Petition (DP22001) and opened a Preliminary Evaluation (PE22007) to investigate allegations of loss of motive power in model year (MY) 2021 Ford Bronco vehicles equipped with 2.7L EcoBoost engines. Complainants were reporting sudden engine failure while driving resulting in a loss of motive power, often without the ability to restart. During PE22007, the cause of engine failure and loss of motive power in the subject vehicles was determined to be intake valve fracture, and the full scope of vehicles affected by the subject defect was identified as all MY 2021-2022 Ford and Lincoln models equipped with either the 2.7L or 3.0L EcoBoost engines, referred to as the “Nano” engine family. If an intake valve fractures in the subject engines, it may drop into the cylinder and contact the piston, often resulting in catastrophic engine damage. On September 29, 2023, PE22007 was upgraded to an Engineering Analysis (EA23002) to further investigate the subject defect across the full scope of affected vehicles. During EA23002, ODI visited Ford facilities to review technical information related to intake valve fracture in “Nano” engines, coordinated with NHTSA’s Vehicle Research and Testing Center (VRTC), and analyzed updated field data relating the subject defect. Forensic analysis of fractured intake valves demonstrated that the defective components exhibited “grinding burn” or out of specificatio

“55,000 miles and start the car it shakes and engine light comes on. My plugin said misfired cylinder so we Take it to Apple ford in maplewood, mn and they say it has coolant in engine cylinders and need to replace the engine for about $7500 and itâs not drivable they said. Internet has many lists of this complaint for my engine but still no recall. Iâve had it parked since waiting.”

“Under normal driving conditions, engine had severe misfires, flashing check engine light, and vehicle had to be pulled to side of highway. Took several hours sitting on highway to get tow truck to tow to dealership. Dealership confirmed coolant in pistons and deemed it a catastrophic engine failure. Problem appears to be widespread with many reports of the same, and a known engine defect that causes the problem.”

“Engine has been shaking/misfiring and white smoke coming from Exhaust. Took it to ford and they said it was a coolant intrusion problem on the first cylinder. Learned there is a design flaw in Fords eco boost engines. There is currently a class action lawsuit with Ford. Was told by Ford that a new engine is needed. Approximately $9,000 for repair”

“The motor is leaking coolant into the cylinders. This affects engine performance and drivability. Coolant has to be added every day. This is a known issue with this motor in other ford vehicles but my vehicle is not included but exhibits the same issues as the other vehicles.”
