Dashboard warning lights: which ones mean stop now

Color is the first clue

Manufacturers use the same basic color code. Toyota's owner pages say yellow icons mark something important but aren't necessarily a warning, and red icons mean a condition that needs immediate attention. Ford's are close: an orange or red light means a problem that should go to a dealer promptly, and a green or blue light means a feature is on.

So the fastest triage is color. Red, pull over when it's safe and read the manual. Amber, get it looked at soon. Green or blue, relax.

Your owner's manual is the final word, since symbols and meanings vary between brands and even models. Volkswagen's guide says so directly. What follows is what three manufacturers' own guides say about the lights that matter most.

Stop now

Engine temperature (red thermometer). Toyota's instruction for its high coolant temperature light is to stop the vehicle in a safe place immediately. Ford says to stop as soon as possible, switch off and let the engine cool. Volkswagen marks its coolant warning "Stop!" The FTC's repair guide adds that if the engine has overheated, you should pull over, since continued driving could cause severe engine damage.

Oil pressure (red oil can). Low oil pressure is on Toyota's short list of red conditions needing immediate attention, and Volkswagen marks it "Stop!" Ford's guidance is to stop as soon as it's safe, switch off, and check the oil level, and not to carry on if the light stays on with the level correct.

Brake system (red "BRAKE" or circle with exclamation mark). Ford's version lights for two reasons: the parking brake is on, or there's a brake fault or low fluid. If it stays on with the parking brake released, Ford warns that driving is dangerous and braking performance may drop significantly. Volkswagen also marks it "Stop!"

Hybrid or high-voltage system fault. Volkswagen's instruction for a hybrid system error is to stop the vehicle at a safe location. Ford says its high-voltage warning means a fault that can shut the vehicle down or put it in a limited mode. Our hybrid and EV guide covers the complaints owners file about these.

The check engine light: steady or flashing

The check engine light (an amber engine outline) has two modes, and they mean different things.

Steady. Ford says a steady light means the on-board diagnostics system found a fault in the emission control system, and to contact a dealer. The FTC lists a lit check engine light among the signs of engine trouble to get diagnosed and scheduled for repair. It's not a pull-over-now light, but it's not one to ignore for months either. Some Fords even have a separate light just for a loose, missing or dirty fuel cap.

Flashing. Ford and Volkswagen both say a flashing check engine light means the engine is misfiring. Ford warns that continuing to drive can cause reduced power or the engine to stop, and that ignoring it may cause damage the warranty won't cover. Treat a flashing light as urgent: ease off, and get the car checked as soon as you can.

These are amber on most cars and usually mean a system has switched itself off.

• ABS. Ford says that with the ABS light on, you still have normal braking without anti-lock, unless the brake warning light is on too. That combination is the one to stop for.
• Airbag (SRS). Toyota says the airbag light indicates a fault in the airbag system. If it doesn't come on at startup, Toyota warns the system may not be available to protect you in a crash.
• Power steering (EPS). Toyota lists it as a malfunction in the electric power steering system.
• Charging system (battery icon). A fault in the charging system, per Toyota. Ford says to switch off unnecessary electrical equipment and have the system checked immediately.
• Tire pressure. Low pressure in one or more tires, or a fault in the monitoring system. Ford and Volkswagen both say a flashing TPMS light means the system itself has a problem.
• Stability or traction control. Ford and Volkswagen both say this light flashes while the system is working. If it stays on, there's a fault or the system has been switched off.

When several lights come on at once

A dashboard that lights up like a pinball machine is its own kind of problem, and owners report it to NHTSA as one. These vehicles on the site have the most reports of multiple warning lights coming on together:

A light that comes on and then goes out

Ford notes that some lights come on when you start the car to show they work, and should go out once it's running. A light that comes on during a drive and then goes out is a different matter. Write down when it happened and mention it at your next service.

Check for a recall

Some warning lights are the first sign of a recalled defect. If a light keeps coming back, run your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and look up your vehicle here to see whether other owners report the same light. If it's a safety problem with no recall, file a complaint with NHTSA.
