What it is and what to do
The reports split into two wordings. On Jeep Cherokees, owners describe a "Service Shifter" alert with every gear light on the shifter lit, sometimes at speed. On GM vehicles such as the GMC Acadia, Chevrolet Volt and Malibu, the message says to shift to Park while the shifter sits in Park and the engine keeps running. Both describe a car that can't tell what gear it's in.
About 3,300 complaints on this site fit, with a median mileage of about 42,000. The 2017 Jeep Cherokee has the most reports, followed by the 2016 and 2018 Cherokee. Close to half use the words "service shifter", about one in ten say the car wouldn't turn off, and a few mention a dead battery afterward. A smaller group, roughly one in sixteen, says wiggling the shifter or cycling through gears made the message go away.
GM Authority traces the message on 2020 to 2023 Malibus to a park switch inside the shifter assembly with spread or damaged terminals, and says the fix is a new shifter assembly. It adds that other GM models sharing the assembly, including the Cruze, Equinox and Traverse, can show it. Complaint text here points the same way: owners repeatedly report being told the shifter assembly, or a shifter bezel and wiring harness, needed replacing.
No recall in the vehicle files names this message. The Jeep Cherokee's power transfer unit recalls are a different fault, though they do involve a loss of the Park function (see the Service 4WD and rollaway sheets).
If the message appears, don't walk away from a running car. Use the parking brake, turn the car off if it lets you, and check that it's in Park before you step out. Tell the shop whether the message came with the car in Park or in Drive, if the shifter lights were lit, how you got it to clear, and whether the battery went flat. Ask them to read the stored codes before ordering parts. GM Authority lists B000A, "Park Switch - Shift Lever Position Not Plausible", for the Malibu case.
Report it during the warranty. The FTC says a defect reported then must be fixed even if the warranty expires before the repair. Look up your VIN at NHTSA's recall site too.
