What this problem usually is
This sheet covers a dash message that says "Shift to Park" or "Service Shifter" when the car is already in Park, or when it's sitting in Drive with the shifter lights glowing. Owners say it won't let them turn the car off, or it flashes up on the highway.

Recalls and investigations

An internal transmission wiring connector may short circuit, resulting in an unexpected engine shutdown.
A loose battery ground connection may result in an intermittent loss of power steering assist and/or a stall.
The powertrain control module may be equipped with a voltage regulator chip in the circuit board that may fail, causing a stall or a no start condition.
The Manual Park Release (MPR) plug may be removed without a tool. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 114, "Theft Protection."
These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging.
The engine control software may become out of sync with the crankshaft position sensor, possibly resulting in an engine stall.

“We keep receiving a service shifter error. We have taken it to the dealership 4 times. When the error comes up we are not able to change the gears. After a while, it starts to work normally again. Now as we drive it we get a bunch of error codes and it is hard to press down on the gas. Today when my husband put it in reverse the car did not move.”

“While driving 10 mph the engine shut off/stalled locking the steering wheel. The dash read shift to park and the shift knob was flashing. The vehicle would not restart at first and took 3 tries before turning over.”
