What it is and what to do
About 1,100 complaints on this site fit, spread over about 85 model years, with a median mileage of about 40,000, early for a drivetrain complaint. The 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the 2016 Ford Fusion and the 2014 Grand Cherokee lead. About three in four use the word rolled, and about three in ten describe a shifter that won't leave Park. About one in five mention a recall and about one in twenty say they use the parking brake every time now.
The recall files show several separate causes.
- Ford recalls 18V-471, 19V-362 and 22V-413 cover the bushing that joins the shifter cable to the transmission on Fusions. When it degrades, the lever can read Park while the transmission isn't in Park, and the vehicle may roll.
- Recall 16V-240 covers 2014 and 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokees with a monostable shifter that may not warn the driver enough when the door opens and the car isn't in Park. NHTSA had opened PE15-030 in 2015 on 14 rollaway complaints on those Grand Cherokees.
- Kia recall 22V-612 covers 2016 Sorento shift lever parts that may fail to lock.
- For the Jeep Cherokee, recalls 20V-343, 23V-302, 25V-011 and 26V-290 cover power transfer unit damage that can cause a loss of the Park function.
NHTSA closed PE16-014, on Ram 1500 and Durango rotary shifters, in January 2024 without finding a design or manufacturing defect, noting that FCA's customer service actions secure the vehicle when a driver tries to leave it out of Park.
Consumer Reports advises drivers never to assume a car isn't in gear just because the engine is quiet. Some recall notices tell owners to apply the parking brake every time they select Park; a Nissan bulletin does.
Tell the shop what you saw on the shifter and dash when it happened, whether the key came out, and whether you were on a slope. If the car ever moves in Park, stop trusting it and get it checked before it carries anyone. Search your VIN at NHTSA's recall site; recall repairs are free.
