Recalls and investigations

3 recalls on the transmission and drivetrain cover the 2017 model year. A recall on the same system isn't always the same failure, so read the defect text.

23V-093Feb 16, 2023
Electrical System:Ignition:Anti-Theft:Immobilizer/Proximity:Key/Sender

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2014-2020 Rogue and 2017-2022 Rogue Sport vehicles equipped with a jackknife style ignition key. The jackknife key may collapse into a folded position while driving.

Risk and remedy
Risk: Driver contact with a key in the collapsed position could inadvertently shut off the vehicle while driving, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, if the vehicle shuts off while driving, the air bags may not deploy in a crash as intended, increasing the risk of injury.
Remedy: Dealers will insert a spacer into the key slot of the jackknife key, free of charge. Interim notification letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed March 29, 2023. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 30, 2023. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is R22C5.
22V-875Nov 23, 2022
Electrical System:Wiring

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2017 Rogue vehicles. Water may leak into and corrode the dash side harness connector.

Risk and remedy
Risk: A corroded dash side harness connector increases the risk of a fire.
Remedy: Dealers will apply grease and repair any corroded connector as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed January 20, 2023. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is PC934.

Engine And Engine Cooling:Engine:Engine Control Module (Ecu/Ecm)

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2017-2019 Rogue Hybrid vehicles. Contact with the Electronic Control Module (ECM) bracket may damage the engine harness, causing a blown fuse.

Risk and remedy
Risk: A blown fuse may cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will install a harness protector cover, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 16, 2021. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is R21B6.

NHTSA investigations into the transmission and drivetrain on the Rogue

PE23-023opened Dec 13, 2023
Engine And Engine Cooling · model years 2021 to 2024

Complete loss of motive power due to engine failure. Closed jul 18, 2025, led to recall 25V-437.

NHTSA summary
On December 13, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE23-023 to investigate allegations of engine failures leading to loss of motive power in model year (MY) 2021-2023 Nissan Rogue; MY 2019-2021 Nissan Altima; and MY 2019-2021 Infiniti QX50 vehicles. At that time, ODI had received 6 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQ) and multiple early warning reports, with consumers reporting engine knocking noises accompanied by a loss of engine power while driving. The investigation identified bearing failures in certain vehicles equipped with the subject 3-cylinder 1.5L or 4-cylinder 2.0L variable compression turbo (VC-Turbo) engines. ODI also identified early warning reports describing thermal incidents that occurred immediately after the vehicle suffered a catastrophic engine failure. The failures were the result of a manufacturing defect in specific engine bearings (main, A-, C-, and L-link) or other engine components that may cause engine damage and potentially lead to engine failure. Engine failure can result in a loss of motive power event that can increase the risk of a crash. Engine failure might also result in a fire if internal components detach and impact the engine block creating a hole that allows engine oil to reach hot surfaces. In its April 2024, May 2024, and June 2025 responses to ODI’s information requests, Nissan provided 998 customer reports (including complaints, field reports, and legal claims) and 1,107 warranty claims related to the allege

None of these investigations covers the 2017 model year.

What owners wrote

“Check engine light comes on and then the engine sputters as the car slowly shuts off. Safety at risk because it happened while I was on highway”

Filed Jul 17, 2025

“My car engine randomly shut down while in drive and would not drive on two occasions. Nissan cannot find any evidence that anything is wrong with my car. They refuse to assist despite this being a known issue. They told me I should pay to take it to another Nissan dealership to pay for another diagnostic test. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)”

Filed Jun 16, 2025

“Transmission stalling when engine is hot. Constantly having putting my entire family’s life in danger as when pressing the gas pedal it does not respond right away. Please make this a recall as so many people are having the same exact issue!! This is not an affordable fix! Nissan needs to make this right.”

Filed Aug 6, 2024

“When traveling at highway speeds 65 MPH, the car stopped accelerating and eventually stalled. There was no warning on the dash.”

Should you keep driving it?

This page can't tell you that. 1 of 53 reports involved a crash. Owners who file are the ones who had a bad experience, and nobody checks their reports. If the problem affects steering, braking, power or a fire risk, treat it as a safety fault and have it inspected before a long or high-speed drive.

File your own report with NHTSA. Complaint counts are how a problem gets an investigation.
