Recalls and investigations

2 recalls on the transmission and drivetrain cover the 2016 model year. A recall on the same system isn't always the same failure, so read the defect text.

23V-093Feb 16, 2023
Electrical System:Ignition:Anti-Theft:Immobilizer/Proximity:Key/Sender

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2014-2020 Rogue and 2017-2022 Rogue Sport vehicles equipped with a jackknife style ignition key. The jackknife key may collapse into a folded position while driving.

Risk and remedy
Risk: Driver contact with a key in the collapsed position could inadvertently shut off the vehicle while driving, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, if the vehicle shuts off while driving, the air bags may not deploy in a crash as intended, increasing the risk of injury.
Remedy: Dealers will insert a spacer into the key slot of the jackknife key, free of charge. Interim notification letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed March 29, 2023. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 30, 2023. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is R22C5.
22V-024Jan 21, 2022
Electrical System:Wiring:Interior/Under Dash

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Rogue vehicles. The electrical connector for the under dash harness may corrode due to water and salt intrusion from the driver's side foot well.

Risk and remedy
Risk: Corrosion in the electrical connector can result in power window/seat failure, all-wheel-drive warning light illumination, battery drainage, and electrical connector damage that increases the risk of a fire.
Remedy: Dealers will remove the harness tape and harness covering and replace both connectors and apply white lithium grease to the connectors as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 23, 2022. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is R21B9.

NHTSA investigations into the transmission and drivetrain on the Rogue

PE23-023opened Dec 13, 2023
Engine And Engine Cooling · model years 2021 to 2024

Complete loss of motive power due to engine failure. Closed jul 18, 2025, led to recall 25V-437.

NHTSA summary
On December 13, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE23-023 to investigate allegations of engine failures leading to loss of motive power in model year (MY) 2021-2023 Nissan Rogue; MY 2019-2021 Nissan Altima; and MY 2019-2021 Infiniti QX50 vehicles. At that time, ODI had received 6 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQ) and multiple early warning reports, with consumers reporting engine knocking noises accompanied by a loss of engine power while driving. The investigation identified bearing failures in certain vehicles equipped with the subject 3-cylinder 1.5L or 4-cylinder 2.0L variable compression turbo (VC-Turbo) engines. ODI also identified early warning reports describing thermal incidents that occurred immediately after the vehicle suffered a catastrophic engine failure. The failures were the result of a manufacturing defect in specific engine bearings (main, A-, C-, and L-link) or other engine components that may cause engine damage and potentially lead to engine failure. Engine failure can result in a loss of motive power event that can increase the risk of a crash. Engine failure might also result in a fire if internal components detach and impact the engine block creating a hole that allows engine oil to reach hot surfaces. In its April 2024, May 2024, and June 2025 responses to ODI’s information requests, Nissan provided 998 customer reports (including complaints, field reports, and legal claims) and 1,107 warranty claims related to the allege

None of these investigations covers the 2016 model year.

What owners wrote

“While driving down the road, the car lost power on an interstate and then would randomly pick up power.”

Filed Jul 31, 2025

“Engine stumbles or even stalls out suddenly on acceleration, often at intersections, and then "forward collision warning sensor malfunction" flashes on the screen. Then, when accelerator is pressed further in an attempt to get the vehicle to move, the engine revs and vehicle lurches forward.”

Filed May 30, 2024

“During highway driving speeds vehicle will suddenly lose power and slow down. Pressing accelerator pedal increases RPM but not the speed. With cruise control engaged vehicle will suddenly and abruptly slow down with RPMs climbing to 4000. I fear that I will be hit from behind because of suddenly slowing down. Also unable to pass vehicles due to loss of power.”

Filed Aug 17, 2023

“Transmission failure caused loss of power resulting in multiple near collisions. When brought to the dealership I was completely dismissed as they were over booked and sent me away.”

Should you keep driving it?

This page can't tell you that. 1 of 57 reports involved a crash and 1 people were hurt. Owners who file are the ones who had a bad experience, and nobody checks their reports. If the problem affects steering, braking, power or a fire risk, treat it as a safety fault and have it inspected before a long or high-speed drive.
