Transmission shudder on other F-150 years
Report counts are for each model year on its own, so a newer car has had less time to collect them. Model years with too few reports of it for a sheet: 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026.
What this problem usually is
This is the biggest drivetrain group on the site: a transmission that shudders, slips, hesitates or bangs into gear. It's the everyday version of transmission trouble, where the car still drives but doesn't drive right, and it has three narrower sheets of its own for jerking, hesitation and slipping.
What got replaced
Owners who name the part that was replaced mention the torque converter (10 reports), the transmission (9 reports), the valve body (6 reports) and the clutch (4 reports).
Recalls and investigations
4 recalls on the transmission and drivetrain cover the 2017 model year. A recall on the same system isn't always the same failure, so read the defect text.
A loss of signal between the transmission range sensor and the powertrain control module can cause the transmission to unexpectedly downshift into second gear.
A roll pin may not have been installed in the transmission, potentially causing a loss of the "Park" function.
The pin that attaches the transmission shift linkage to the transmission may come out, preventing the transmission from responding to movement of the shift lever.
In these vehicles, the instrument cluster may lose power after the initial vehicle start-up in cold ambient temperatures. Several gauges, including the transmission gear position indicator, may not illuminate.

Is this a known problem?
The manufacturer has sent NHTSA 9 service bulletins or notices for the 2017 Ford F-150 that deal with this problem. Newest first.
Federal rules make a manufacturer send NHTSA a copy of any notice about a defect that goes to more than one dealer or owner. Most of these are service bulletins, the repair instructions manufacturers send to dealers. NHTSA generally leaves safety recall bulletins out of this file, and recalls are listed separately.

“Consistent hard shifting and hard downshifts.. Dealership charged us to reset this and it has not solved the problem I bought this vehicle used at 77,000 miles and it was the biggest mistake I ever made. Ford keeps denying that thereâs an issue with the transmissions and Iâm genuinely afraid to own this vehicle.”

“While driving on the interstate the vehicle transmission slipped and lost 8 gears. The vehicle was only able to run with 5th and 9th gear. At this time the wrench warning light appeared on the dash, I checked the owner's manual, which said powertrain failure take it to the dealer. It has been inspected and confirmed by the dealer that the transmission needs to be replaced.”

Should you keep driving it?
This page can't tell you that. 0 of 162 reports involved a crash and 1 people were hurt. Owners who file are the ones who had a bad experience, and nobody checks their reports. If the problem affects steering, braking, power or a fire risk, treat it as a safety fault and have it inspected before a long or high-speed drive.
