Steering wheel clicks, clunks or grinds when I turn

About 1,200 complaints on this site describe it, and the pool is wider than most: about 85 model years, with the 2016 Ford Explorer and the 2024 Honda Prologue leading. Honda supplies about a third of the reports and Ford about three in ten, with Explorers making up about one in five of the total. The median is about 49,000 miles, and about one in seven of those who give a mileage are under 15,000, so new cars show up. Owners split roughly like this: about four in ten mention clicking or popping, one in five grinding, squealing or creaking, and one in six a clunk or knock. About a quarter say it's worse at low speed or when parking.

The noise itself doesn't point to one part. A repair guide from 1A Auto puts the steering shaft first, the shaft with universal joints at both ends that links the steering column to the rack, and says corroded or worn joints make a metal-on-metal clunk when the wheel turns. The same guide says other front-end parts can make similar sounds. In the complaints, about half of owners say the dealer named the rack, the column, a coupler or a CV axle, and the Prologue reports often mention the front axle. About one in twenty-five say the dealer called it normal or found nothing.

NHTSA's recall and investigation files for the leading vehicles here don't name steering noise as a defect. The Explorer files include PE12-017 on sudden loss of electric power steering assist, which ended in recall 14V-286 for 2011 to 2013 models, and that is a different fault from a clunk. A noise can still be an early sign of a worn part, so check your own VIN at NHTSA's recall page instead of assuming there is nothing.

The 1A Auto guide warns that in worse cases you may not be able to control the car, which is why a steering noise that comes with a stiff wheel, wheels that don't follow the wheel, or a warning light shouldn't wait.

Tell the shop which direction you're turning, how sharp, how fast you're going, and whether the noise is in the wheel, the dash or the front wheels. Say if it changes when the car is stopped and you turn the wheel, since that separates steering parts from axle parts. Ask for the part they blame in writing. If the first repair doesn't stop it, say so and keep the repair order; some Prologue owners report an axle or CV joint replaced without the click going away.

Under warranty, get every visit on record. The FTC says a defect reported during the warranty period must be fixed even if the warranty expires before the repair.
