What it is and what to do
About 1,500 complaints on this site fit, with a median mileage of about 77,000. The Cherokee accounts for most of them, with the 2019 model year far ahead of the 2016, 2017 and 2014. Almost nine in ten name the PTU. About four in ten say the Service 4WD light came on, about one in six describes grinding or whining from underneath, and about one in eight lost power on the road. Over half mention a recall or a part on back order, and roughly one in twelve was told the repair isn't covered.
NHTSA has four PTU recalls on the Cherokee in the vehicle files.
- 20V-343 covers 2014 to 2017 models with the two-speed PTU, where spline teeth can wear off and cause a loss of drive and a loss of the Park function. The remedy was software that engages rear wheel drive and applies the electronic parking brake after a spline failure.
- 23V-302 expands it to 2016 and 2017 models.
- 25V-011 covers 2017 to 2019 models, with a software update and a PTU replacement as necessary.
- 26V-290 covers 2019 to 2023 models. Interim owner letters went out in June 2026, and the final remedy hadn't been announced when the letters were mailed.
None of those summaries mentions the dash light, so a lit Service 4WD doesn't prove a PTU failure, and the recall doesn't tie to that message. YourMechanic says the light can appear when the computer thinks the transfer case hasn't been used in a while, and that a technician should diagnose it. CarParts.com lists sensor and wiring faults, the transfer case control module and worn drivetrain parts as triggers, and says the car can be driven with the warning on but ignoring it risks damage to the all-wheel-drive system.
Complaint text shows a trap: some owners say the dealer did the software update, found no PTU code, and declined to replace the unit, including under an extended warranty. Ask for the stored codes and the recall status in writing. Say whether grinding came before the light, whether the electronic parking brake acted up, and whether the car rolled in Park. With a Cherokee, a loss of Park is a safety issue, so use the parking brake.
