What it is and what to do
About 1,800 complaints on this site fit, and more than a quarter of them come from one vehicle year, the 2023 Honda HR-V. The 2019 and 2020 Acura RDX, the 2014 Ford F-150 and the 2025 Nissan Rogue follow. About a third say the car was parked or turned off, and about three in ten say nothing hit the glass. About a third also mention the rear defroster, and about one in six a loud bang or pop. Among reports that give a mileage (about a third do) the median is about 41,000, so these are fairly young cars. About one in six says the owner was told to pay, or that insurance or the warranty wouldn't cover it.
Speers Auto Glass gives the usual explanations: small stones and road debris can weaken the glass so it fails later, and rapid heating from the defroster grid can stress glass that already has a chip. Normal body flex can finish off a weakened panel. Rear glass is tempered, so it breaks into small pieces and can't be patched. Speers says it almost always needs full replacement, since the defroster lines can't be restored. Owners here often say they found no chip or mark beforehand, so none of these explanations can be confirmed for a given car from the reports alone.
The vehicle records on this site show no recall for this symptom on the leading vehicles above. Two recalls nearby concern different faults. Nissan's 20V570 covered 2020 Altima, Maxima and Leaf vehicles whose rear window glass may not stay secured to the car. Kia's 25V493 covers 2023 to 2025 K5 rear window trim pieces that may loosen and detach.
If it happens, Speers says to clear loose glass with gloves, vacuum the fragments from the interior and cover the opening with plastic or cardboard until a glass shop can replace it.
When you talk to the shop or the manufacturer, say whether the car was moving or parked, whether the defroster was running, whether the hatch or a door had just been shut, and whether you'd seen a chip. Check the VIN in NHTSA's recall lookup. If a warranty claim is refused, the FTC says to put your complaint in writing to the manufacturer and, if the dispute stays unresolved, to report it to your state attorney general or the FTC. A complaint filed with NHTSA adds your case to the pattern it screens for investigations.
