What is your Sierra 1500 doing?

Each one opens a sheet built from the owner reports of that problem on the 2022 model year.

Is the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 reliable?

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 has 587 owner complaints on file with NHTSA, 3.2 times the median of 185 for 2022 pickups on this site. Of the 13 Sierra 1500 model years since 2014, it has the 4th most complaints. Complaint counts rise with sales as well as faults, so read what owners report below before deciding.

At a glance

Next to the 2021 and 2023
At 117 complaints for each year on the road, the 2022 runs above the 2021 (96) and close to the 2023 (120).
Top problem
Engine failure leads with 138 of the 587 complaints (24%), ahead of stalling at 110. A quarter of the 68 owners who gave a mileage for engine failure saw it by about 20,000 miles, and half by about 40,000.
Crash, fire and injury reports
Only 15 of the 587 complaints (3%) report a crash, a fire or an injury, well under the 6% typical of vehicles on this site. Counted separately (one report can carry more than one), 9 reports mention a crash, 5 mention a fire and 3 people were hurt.
Recalls behind the top problems
Each of engine failure, stalling and trim coming off has a recall on the same system: engine failure and stalling, 25V-274; trim coming off, 25V-060. A recall on the same system doesn't always cover the failure owners describe, so compare its summary with the complaints.
When owners filed
Filings jumped in 2025, with 266 complaints, 2.9 times the next busiest year. So far in 2026, 172 more have come in.

Counts follow sales volume as much as reliability, so a truck that sells 700,000 a year draws more reports than a sedan that sells 200,000.

Service bulletins for the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500

GMC filed 1,603 bulletins and other notices with NHTSA that list the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500. 104 of them deal with a problem owners have reported on this car. Newest first.

Federal rules make a manufacturer send NHTSA a copy of any notice about a defect that goes to more than one dealer or owner. Loss of motive power due to engine failure. Open.

        NHTSA summary
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 1,157 reports of engine bearing failure failures in the L87 6.2L engine produced by General Motors (GM). Of the 1,157 reports received, 173 are outside of the scope of recall 25V-274. These engines are installed in Model Years (MY) 2019–2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, and 2021-2024MY Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, GMC Yukon/Yukon XL, and Cadillac Escalade/Escalade ESV vehicles. The subject engine failures were investigated as part of a Preliminary Evaluation (PE25001). GM determined that these engine failures were due to multiple supplier manufacturing and quality issues. GM issued recall 25V-274 to address the supplier manufacturing and quality issues produced between March 1, 2021, and May 31, 2024. Based on the issuance of recall 25V-274, NHTSA has closed PE25001. ODI continues to receive a significant number of reports of engine failure in vehicles outside the scope of 25V-274. This presents a potential safety risk that warrants further investigation. ODI is opening this Engineering Analysis (EA) to further evaluate the scope and severity of the potential problem and to fully assess the potential safety-related issues of vehicles built outside the recall scope. To review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

        NHTSA summary
On January 16, 2025, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation PE25001 after receiving complaints and field reports concerning engine failures in MY2019-2024 GM’s full-size truck and SUV T1XX platform equipped with the L87 6.2L V8 engine. These complainants alleged engine bearing failures resulting in knocking and growling noises from the engine’s bottom end and in some cases more severe consequences such as broken connecting rods leading to engine damage, or engine failure. If the engine fails during vehicle operation, the vehicle will lose propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash. On April 24, 2025, GM issued recall 25V-274 to address the concern with L87 engines produced between March 1, 2021, and May 31, 2024. GM cited the root cause as a supplier manufacturing and quality issues.
