What is your Mustang Mach-E doing?

Each one opens a sheet built from the owner reports of that problem on the 2021 model year.

Is the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E reliable?

The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E has 347 owner complaints on file with NHTSA, 1.6 times the median of 216 for 2021 SUVs on this site. Of the 5 Mustang Mach-E model years since 2021, it has the most complaints. Complaint counts rise with sales as well as faults, so read what owners report below before deciding.

At a glance

Next to the 2022
At 58 complaints for each year on the road, the 2021 runs 2.1 times the 2022 (28). That's the only adjacent model year with enough complaints to set beside it.
Top problem
Two problems run close. False collision warning has 81 complaints and dead battery has 71, out of 347 in all. Too few of the false collision warning reports give a mileage to say when it starts.
Crash, fire and injury reports
15 of the 347 complaints (4%) report a crash, a fire or an injury, a little under the 6% typical of vehicles on this site. Counted separately (one report can carry more than one), 14 reports mention a crash, 1 mentions a fire and 9 people were hurt.
Recalls behind the top problems
Dead battery and driver assist each have a recall on the same system (22V-412, 23V-687 and 2 others; 22V-333). False collision warning has none. A recall on the same system doesn't always cover the failure owners describe, so compare its summary with the complaints.
When owners filed
Filings peaked in 2022 at 106 and have dropped every year since, to 55 in 2025. So far in 2026, 26 more have come in.

When each problem shows up

Each bar covers the middle half of the mileages owners reported for that problem. A quarter saw it earlier, a quarter later. The tick is the median. Most reported: forward collision warning goes off or the camera drops out, 81 complaints.

347 complaints is 1.8 times the median 2021 model on this site and 1.6 times the median 2021 SUV. Among the 3 Mustang Mach-E model years here it ranks 1st for complaints. Counts follow sales volume as much as reliability, so a truck that sells 700,000 a year draws more reports than a sedan that sells 200,000.

Service bulletins for the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E

Ford filed 328 bulletins and other notices with NHTSA that list the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E. 102 of them deal with a problem owners have reported on this car. Newest first.

Federal rules make a manufacturer send NHTSA a copy of any notice about a defect that goes to more than one dealer or owner. Most of these are service bulletins, the repair instructions manufacturers send to dealers. NHTSA generally leaves safety recall bulletins out of this file, and recalls are listed separately.

High voltage battery contactor failure. Closed dec 6, 2023, led to recall 23V-687.

        NHTSA summary
On August 17, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) opened RQ23-004 to investigate instances of loss of motor power due to overheating high voltage battery contactors in model year (MY) 2021-2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles (subject vehicles). This Recall Query (RQ) was opened after receiving 12 consumer complaints alleging a high voltage battery main contactor failure in subject vehicles that were included in Recall 22V-412 and remedied prior to the reported incidents. The remedy in 22V-412 was a Secondary On-Board Diagnostic Control Module (SOBDMC) software update to monitor contactor temperature and reduce battery power to prevent damage to the contactor, and a Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) software update to monitor contactor resistance to identify an overheated contactor and reduce vehicle power to prevent further damage. On October 13, 2023, Ford filed Recall 23V-687 of 34,762 2021-2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles produced from May 27, 2020 to May 24, 2022 with recalled Bussed Electrical Center parts NK48-10C666-AA, NK48-10C666-BA, or LK98-10C666-AB. Affected vehicles are equipped with the extended range battery. Ford stated that preexisting damage to the contactors caused by heat and accumulated wear may reduce the effectiveness of the software update remedy in 22V-412. The remedy of 23V-687 is to complete a replacement of the Bussed Electrical Center, or High Voltage Battery Junction Box. In addition, Ford stated that subject vehicles equipped with

        NHTSA summary
NHTSA received a petition on or about July 18, 2022, requesting that Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the United States. The petition can be reviewed at NHTSA.gov under ODI Number 11486072. FMVSS 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 KG or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after March 1, 2021.On January 27, 2023, NHTSA opened Defect Petition (DP) 22-005 to evaluate the subject matter described in the petition. On June 24, 2023 and as supplemented on June 25, 2023, the petitioner notified NHTSA he was withdrawing his petition. The petitioner indicated that, based on his review of data, there is no justification for asserting potential benefits that could be derived from actions sought by my petition. Based on the petitioner's withdrawal, DP22-005 is closed. Closure of this DP does not represent a determination by NHTSA regarding the subject matter of the petition.
