Recalls and investigations

One recall on the transmission and drivetrain covers the 2023 model year. A recall on the same system isn't always the same failure, so read the defect text.

Power Train:Automatic Transmission:Control Module (Tcm/Pcm/Tecm)

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2022-2024 Maverick Hybrid and 2020 Escape Hybrid vehicles. The Hybrid Powertrain Control Module (HPCM) software may cause the vehicle to shift into neutral unexpectedly, causing a loss of drive power.

Risk and remedy
Risk: A loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will update the HPCM software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed February 12, 2026. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 24S33. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning January 15, 2026. This is an expansion of Recalls 24V330 (24S33) and 25V133 (25S16).

NHTSA summary
On January 31, 2024, The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened a Preliminary Evaluation (PE24002) to investigate loss of motive power allegations in model year (MY) 2021 Ford Bronco Sport vehicles. Consumers reported a loss of engine power accompanied by complete electrical system failure either while driving or after stopping at a traffic light or stop sign. The vehicles generally could not be restarted, and the incidents were commonly diagnosed by dealerships to a failed 12-Volt (12V) battery. On April 12, 2024, Ford issued safety recall 24V-267 covering 456,565 MY 2021-2024 Ford Bronco Sport and MY 2022-2023 Ford Maverick vehicles. The recall addressed loss of motive power resulting from sudden degradation of the 12V battery during the drive cycle. The recall remedy consisted of software updates to the body control module and the powertrain control module. The updated software aimed to provide warning to consumers when the battery is failing and inhibit certain vehicle functions which can lead to loss of motive power incidents. Additionally, Ford removed the existing 12V Enhanced Flooded Battery (EFB) as both a service component for the subject vehicles and original equipment for newly built Bronco Sport vehicles (during MY 2024 production), replacing it with a more robust absorbed glass mat (AGM) battery. The same AGM battery had been incorporated into Ford Maverick production in late 2022. Following recall 24V-267, ODI received loss of motive power complaints in v

What owners wrote

“Truck started to shake when accelerating past 50 mph. The shaking would stop once the speed limit was reached and you let off the accelerator. Web search results showed 2022, 2023 & 2024 Ford Maverick hybrids are known for CV axle failures with those symptoms. Vehicle was around 48,000 miles. Dealership replaced both CV axles under the 5 year/60,000 mile warranty.”

“Total 12v battery drain/failure which is a known problem with the Ford Maverick Hybrid, could not even put hazards on to avoid getting hit on the side of the road. Ford tests battery and says battery is good, but the problem is the Maverick Hybrid is not adequately charging the battery when it is driven.”

“I own a 2023 Ford Maverick XLT Hybrid. I am having issues with the 12v battery. The battery drains unexpectedly making the truck go into Battery Saver Mode. I already took it to the Ford de leadership where it received a new 12v battery. Couple of months go by and now the replacement battery is having the same issue.”

“Since new in Sept 2023 this vehicle has suffered from consistent charging problems with the 12 volt battery, it sends "deep sleep" warnings to the Ford App and disables certain safety features. Charging the battery only restores functionality temporarily, driving the car ends up depleting the 12 volt battery over time. It affects all Ford Maverick Hybrids including mine.”

Should you keep driving it?

This page can't tell you that. 0 of 35 reports involved a crash. Owners who file are the ones who had a bad experience, and nobody checks their reports. If the problem affects steering, braking, power or a fire risk, treat it as a safety fault and have it inspected before a long or high-speed drive.
