Recalls and investigations

One recall on the transmission and drivetrain covers the 2019 model year. A recall on the same system isn't always the same failure, so read the defect text.

20V-550Sep 10, 2020
Power Train:Automatic Transmission

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Edge, Transit Connect and Lincoln MKX and 2020 Escape and Lincoln Corsair vehicles. The start/stop accumulator endcap may have missing or loose bolts.

Risk and remedy
Risk: Missing or loose bolts on the start stop accumulator endcap could result in a transmission fluid leak and may progress to a loss of transmission function. A transmission fluid leak in the presence of an ignition source may increase the risk of fire.
Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the start/stop accumulator, free of charge. The recall began September 23, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S49.

NHTSA investigations into the transmission and drivetrain on the Edge

Engine And Engine Cooling · model years 2015 to 2018

Loss of motive power. Open.

NHTSA summary
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) received a petition on August 5, 2026, requesting a defect investigation into the 2.0 Liter EcoBoost engine on model year 2015-2018 Ford Edge vehicles. The petition alleges that engine coolant intrusion results in a significant loss of engine power, accompanied by an "Engine Coolant Over Temperature" warning message. The petition further alleges that after the vehicle has sat and cooled down, the engine runs roughly and generates a check engine light for a cylinder misfire. This defect petition is being opened to evaluate the issue and determine whether to grant or deny the petition. The petition can be reviewed at NHTSA.gov under ODI number 11754989.

Loss of motive power. Closed oct 31, 2024, led to recall 24V-635.

NHTSA summary
On July 22, 2022, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) granted a Defect Petition (DP22001) and opened a Preliminary Evaluation (PE22007) to investigate allegations of loss of motive power in model year (MY) 2021 Ford Bronco vehicles equipped with 2.7L EcoBoost engines. Complainants were reporting sudden engine failure while driving resulting in a loss of motive power, often without the ability to restart. During PE22007, the cause of engine failure and loss of motive power in the subject vehicles was determined to be intake valve fracture, and the full scope of vehicles affected by the subject defect was identified as all MY 2021-2022 Ford and Lincoln models equipped with either the 2.7L or 3.0L EcoBoost engines, referred to as the “Nano” engine family. If an intake valve fractures in the subject engines, it may drop into the cylinder and contact the piston, often resulting in catastrophic engine damage. On September 29, 2023, PE22007 was upgraded to an Engineering Analysis (EA23002) to further investigate the subject defect across the full scope of affected vehicles. During EA23002, ODI visited Ford facilities to review technical information related to intake valve fracture in “Nano” engines, coordinated with NHTSA’s Vehicle Research and Testing Center (VRTC), and analyzed updated field data relating the subject defect. Forensic analysis of fractured intake valves demonstrated that the defective components exhibited “grinding burn” or out of specificatio

What owners wrote

“Car shudders, hesitates and feels like it is going to stall at lower speeds. Vehicle has 39500 miles on it. Taken to local dealership and it was diagnosed with needing the Torque Converter replaced. This seems to be an ongoing issue with this component and should be a recall”

“The stop start actuator has been on for 3 days I have lost power in reverse and drive but the gears are still engaging”

“I have had the high-pressure fuel pump fail on me three times in less than 10,000 miles. This causes the motor to shut down, crank no start and I’ve also had it blow the fuel pump off the top of the motor and dump the oil on the highway on the windshield all over the car, creating a severe crash hazard on these events”

Filed Nov 6, 2025 · 10,000 miles

“The power train fail on the expressway left lane just shut down it was very dangerous. A Ford dealer service department concluded that the true temperature of transmission fluid was not reading over heating but the fluid it’s self read overheated… also the reported that the transmission fluid was spewing out and had pieces of metal in it. As well as the internal computer not running as it should.”

Should you keep driving it?

This page can't tell you that. 1 of 85 reports involved a crash and 1 people were hurt. Owners who file are the ones who had a bad experience, and nobody checks their reports. If the problem affects steering, braking, power or a fire risk, treat it as a safety fault and have it inspected before a long or high-speed drive.
