Recalls and investigations

One recall on the engine covers the 2017 model year. A recall on the same system isn't always the same failure, so read the defect text.

Engine And Engine Cooling:Engine

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2017 Jeep Renegade vehicles equipped with a 2.4L engine. These vehicles may be equipped with a cracked oil pump housing/balance shaft module (BSM), which can cause the oil pump to fail and the engine to stall.

Risk and remedy
Risk: An engine stall can increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the oil pump for its production information, and replace the BSM as necessary, free of charge. The recall began March 13, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is U18.

When it happens

The middle half of failures fell between 36,719 and 52,000 miles, from the 13 reports that gave a mileage.

What owners wrote

“Under normal driving conditions, coolant rapidly started leaking from the engine, and vehicle started overheating. UNKNOWN component failure, vehicle is currently at an independent service station. No warnings prior to overheating.”

Filed Sep 8, 2026

“Something shot out of the engine and caused a large hole the car never overheated and oil changes were done properly. The dealership says sometimes these things just happen and is unable to tell me what shot through the engine.”

Filed Jun 27, 2025

“Cooling motor fan is shorted and causing fan fuse to blow therefore causing engine to overheat which can blow it up and cause EXTREME SAFETY ISSUES. There should be an active recall on my vehicle as the cooling fan needs completely replaced and I have looked this problem up and other 2015-2017 Jeep Renegades have had this problem with active recalls.”

Filed Jan 28, 2023

“The coolant loses too fast, like one cup coolant per one thousand miles. But coolant dripping can be found.”

Should you keep driving it?

This page can't tell you that. 0 of 25 reports involved a crash and 1 people were hurt. Owners who file are the ones who had a bad experience, and nobody checks their reports. If the problem affects steering, braking, power or a fire risk, treat it as a safety fault and have it inspected before a long or high-speed drive.

File your own report with NHTSA. Complaint counts are how a problem gets an investigation.
