Recalls and investigations
One recall on the engine covers the 2023 model year. A recall on the same system isn't always the same failure, so read the defect text.
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, and Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles equipped with a 6.2L V8 gas engine. The connecting rod and/or crankshaft engine components may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine damage and engine failure.
Risk and remedy
Remedy: Dealers will inspect the engine, and as necessary, repair or replace the engine. For vehicles that pass inspection, dealers will add higher viscosity oil, install 6 oil fill cap, replace the oil filter, and update the owner's manual. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 18, 2025. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-333-4223, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N252494000.

What owners wrote
“Our truck had just passed 60,000 miles when the engine seized. The recall procedure was completed in January, and the engine passed the test at that time. We were also using the recommended 0Wâ40 oil. Despite following all guidelines, the engine still failed. This shows that the procedure GM has outlined is not sufficient to determine whether an engine is actually in good condition.”

“I was driving on the Oklahoma turnpike @ 75mph when the engine locked up in traffic. I coasted to the side of the road and called roadside assistance. The truck is currently at Vance GMC in Miami, OK getting the engine replaced.”

“While driving the vehicle the vehicle stopped, and engine seized. I could not move the vehicle out of neutral nor restart the vehicle to get out of the road. It was towed to our local dealership's service department on 2/16/25 and has been there since. They are stating the vehicle needs a new engine and the engine is on backorder. OF COURSE! This seems to be an ongoing issue with the 6.2L V8 engine for GMC vehicles.”

“With out any warning the truck stop running at stoplight an would not start back up. We could not move the truck out of the road and blocked traffic for almost 1 hour waiting for the tow truck and getting it loaded on the tow truck (truck would not go in to neutral). The truck is now at the Dealer and they are saying that the engine seized up and will need replaced.”

Should you keep driving it?
This page can't tell you that. 1 of 35 reports involved a crash. Owners who file are the ones who had a bad experience, and nobody checks their reports. If the problem affects steering, braking, power or a fire risk, treat it as a safety fault and have it inspected before a long or high-speed drive.
File your own report with NHTSA. Complaint counts are how a problem gets an investigation.
