What is your Mustang doing?
Each one opens a sheet built from the owner reports of that problem on the 2017 model year.
Is the 2017 Ford Mustang reliable?
The 2017 Ford Mustang has 265 owner complaints on file with NHTSA, close to the median of 256 for 2017 coupes on this site. Of the 12 Mustang model years since 2014, it has the 4th most complaints. Complaint counts rise with sales as well as faults, so read what owners report below before deciding.
At a glance
- Next to the 2016 and 2018
- Complaints ease off across these three model years. Counted per year on the road, the 2016 draws 34, the 2017 26 and the 2018 21.
- Top problem
- Infotainment leads with 69 of the 265 complaints (26%), ahead of door latch at 27. A quarter of the 38 owners who gave a mileage for infotainment saw it by about 24,000 miles, and half by about 45,000.
- Crash, fire and injury reports
- 21 of the 265 complaints (8%) report a crash, a fire or an injury, a little above the 6% typical of vehicles on this site. Counted separately (one report can carry more than one), 14 reports mention a crash, 8 mention a fire and 11 people were hurt. The most crash reports, 7 of 14, fall under airbag.
- Recalls behind the top problems
- Door latch has a recall on the same system (17V-168). Infotainment has none. A recall on the same system doesn't always cover the failure owners describe, so compare its summary with the complaints.
- When owners filed
- Filings peaked in 2022 at 43 (full calendar years only). In 2025 there were 30. So far in 2026, 21 more have come in.

How this compares
265 complaints is about the median for a 2017 model on this site and about the median for a 2017 coupe. Among the 7 Mustang model years here it ranks 4th for complaints. Counts follow sales volume as much as reliability, so a truck that sells 700,000 a year draws more reports than a sedan that sells 200,000.
