Recalls and investigations
One recall on the structure covers the 2017 model year. A recall on the same system isn't always the same failure, so read the defect text.
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2017 Ford Mustang vehicles. The return spring for the driver side interior door handle may come loose, allowing the driver's door to unlatch in a side impact crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 206, "Door Locks and Door Retention Components."
Risk and remedy
Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driver-side interior door handle and repair the return spring, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began April 14, 2017. Owners may contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for the recall is 17C04.

What owners wrote
“Passenger door opens consistently when hitting bumps in the road. Door ajar warning comes on instantly and car beeps.”
Filed May 31, 2025
“Passenger door became partially unlatched while driving at highway speed over rough pavement. This is the second time this has occurred. Both times the dashboard warning light came on to let us know it was unlatched, but we are certain that it was completely closed when initially getting into vehicle. Online Q&A sites confirm multiple others with this experience and no recalls or TSB to this date.”

“Passenger door came unlatched on the highway going approximately 70 mph once on 10/6/2023 and again the next day on 10/7/2023. First, the driver heard the door click and then hear wind and then the door ajar alert sounded on the dashboard.”
Filed Oct 7, 2023
“When driving on highway 60-80 mph after maybe 40-50 minutes the driver door unlatches, the door Ajar alert comes on. The passenger door has also opened, not at the same time. The problem is mostly the driver door. It is very traumatizing to be driving and feel the door unlatch at high speeds on highway. I have reported this multiple times please issue a safety recall to include this model as well.”

Should you keep driving it?
This page can't tell you that. 0 of 27 reports involved a crash and 1 people were hurt. Owners who file are the ones who had a bad experience, and nobody checks their reports. If the problem affects steering, braking, power or a fire risk, treat it as a safety fault and have it inspected before a long or high-speed drive.
