Recalls and investigations

One recall on the transmission and drivetrain covers the 2019 model year. A recall on the same system isn't always the same failure, so read the defect text.

20V-550Sep 10, 2020
Power Train:Automatic Transmission

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Edge, Transit Connect and Lincoln MKX and 2020 Escape and Lincoln Corsair vehicles. The start/stop accumulator endcap may have missing or loose bolts.

Risk and remedy
Risk: Missing or loose bolts on the start stop accumulator endcap could result in a transmission fluid leak and may progress to a loss of transmission function. A transmission fluid leak in the presence of an ignition source may increase the risk of fire.
Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the start/stop accumulator, free of charge. The recall began September 23, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S49.

When it happens

The middle half of failures fell between 60,000 and 70,000 miles, from the 18 reports that gave a mileage.

What owners wrote

“Transmission is juttering and slipping significantly. Low power on take off and no check engine light on. Dealer states there is nothing wrong but clearly something is wrong with the Transmission.”

Filed Aug 23, 2025

“Shuddering when driving, hard shifting down, transmission feels to be slipping. no warning lights on yet. I am worried about it not shifting and causing an accident or slipping the gear & causing an accident.”

Filed Jul 23, 2025

“Purchased a 2019 Ford Edge that now has 62,000 miles. In April of 2025, the transmission started to stutter/slipping, shifting rough, and hesitate between 20 and 40 mph. Our car was not part of the Ford recall. Ford should repair this issue without charge.”

Filed Jul 1, 2025 · 62,000 miles

“Transmission is sluggish, seems to be slipping starting off up to 25 mpg or so. Ford dealer says the torque converter is bad and recommends a complete transmission replacement”

Should you keep driving it?

This page can't tell you that. 2 of 40 reports involved a crash. Owners who file are the ones who had a bad experience, and nobody checks their reports. If the problem affects steering, braking, power or a fire risk, treat it as a safety fault and have it inspected before a long or high-speed drive.

File your own report with NHTSA. Complaint counts are how a problem gets an investigation.
