Recalls and investigations

One recall on the engine covers the 2018 model year. A recall on the same system isn't always the same failure, so read the defect text.

Electrical System:Alternator/Generator/Regulator

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2018 Ford Edge, Lincoln MKX, 2019 Ford Flex, and Lincoln MKT vehicles. The power supply cables at the starter and the alternator may not have been properly secured, possibly resulting in an electrical arc.

Risk and remedy
Risk: An electrical arc can increase the risk of a fire.
Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the alternator and starter motor power supply cables to verify that they are properly secured, correcting them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began September 26, 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 18S25.

NHTSA investigations into the engine on the Edge

Engine And Engine Cooling · model years 2015 to 2018

Loss of motive power. Open.

NHTSA summary
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) received a petition on August 5, 2026, requesting a defect investigation into the 2.0 Liter EcoBoost engine on model year 2015-2018 Ford Edge vehicles. The petition alleges that engine coolant intrusion results in a significant loss of engine power, accompanied by an "Engine Coolant Over Temperature" warning message. The petition further alleges that after the vehicle has sat and cooled down, the engine runs roughly and generates a check engine light for a cylinder misfire. This defect petition is being opened to evaluate the issue and determine whether to grant or deny the petition. The petition can be reviewed at NHTSA.gov under ODI number 11754989.

Loss of motive power. Closed oct 31, 2024, led to recall 24V-635.

NHTSA summary
On July 22, 2022, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) granted a Defect Petition (DP22001) and opened a Preliminary Evaluation (PE22007) to investigate allegations of loss of motive power in model year (MY) 2021 Ford Bronco vehicles equipped with 2.7L EcoBoost engines. Complainants were reporting sudden engine failure while driving resulting in a loss of motive power, often without the ability to restart. During PE22007, the cause of engine failure and loss of motive power in the subject vehicles was determined to be intake valve fracture, and the full scope of vehicles affected by the subject defect was identified as all MY 2021-2022 Ford and Lincoln models equipped with either the 2.7L or 3.0L EcoBoost engines, referred to as the “Nano” engine family. If an intake valve fractures in the subject engines, it may drop into the cylinder and contact the piston, often resulting in catastrophic engine damage. On September 29, 2023, PE22007 was upgraded to an Engineering Analysis (EA23002) to further investigate the subject defect across the full scope of affected vehicles. During EA23002, ODI visited Ford facilities to review technical information related to intake valve fracture in “Nano” engines, coordinated with NHTSA’s Vehicle Research and Testing Center (VRTC), and analyzed updated field data relating the subject defect. Forensic analysis of fractured intake valves demonstrated that the defective components exhibited “grinding burn” or out of specificatio

What owners wrote

“The engine continually exhibits cylinder #2 misfiring, disappearing coolant, and rough idling. Efforts have been made, but these issues relate directly to a cracked block allowing coolant into the combustion chamber. The car has about 93,000 miles on it and has been meticulously maintained, but still the issues are getting worse and more frequent.”

“2018 Ford Escape Titanium with Ecoboost. Zero problems until 66,000 miles when the coolant started leaking into the spark plugs and cylinder 2 started misfiring. I was told I would need to replace the engine at $8,000 cost. Steve's Car Care had an email about this issue. Apparently, Ford knows about it. This is an issue that should definitely be a recall fix by Ford.”

“Check engine light appeared and the car ran rough. I took the car to an automotive repair shop. Spark plugs are misfiring into the cylinder causing coolant to leak into the engine. Then causing the engine block to crack. 2018 ford edge with only 38000 miles. The engine could start on fire and cause catastrophic failure. The car is not drivable and the mechanic cannot repair it without changing the whole engine out.”

“100,000 Miles ad 2 months out of warranty -- dealer indicated the check engine light code of P0302 is a collant intrusion and the entire engine needs to be replaced for $10,454. This appears to be a reoccuring problem with Ford Edge Ecoboost.”

Should you keep driving it?

This page can't tell you that. 0 of 169 reports involved a crash. Owners who file are the ones who had a bad experience, and nobody checks their reports. If the problem affects steering, braking, power or a fire risk, treat it as a safety fault and have it inspected before a long or high-speed drive.
