Recalls and investigations

One recall on the airbags covers the 2020 model year. A recall on the same system isn't always the same failure, so read the defect text.

Air Bags:Sensor:Occupant Classification

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Avalon, Avalon Hybrid, Corolla, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid, Lexus ES350, Lexus RX350, Lexus RX450H, 2021 Sienna Hybrid, Lexus ES250, 2020-2022 Camry, Camry Hybrid, and ES300H vehicles. A short circuit may develop in the Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensor, preventing the front passenger air bag from deploying.

Risk and remedy
Risk: An air bag that does not deploy during a crash increases the risk of injury.
Remedy: Dealers will inspect and replace the sensor as necessary, free of charge. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed in February 2024. Some final remedy owner letters were mailed October 31, 2024. Letters will continue to be mailed in phases through January 2026. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 23TB15/23TA15 Lexus 23LB03/23LA03.

“A safety recall for the Occupant Classification System (OCS) was issued by NHTSA in Dec 2023. I have contacted my Toyota dealer on 6/7/24 and again on 10/28/24 and they said that "A remedy is still not available" and "Toyota has not found a fix yet". It is now Feb 2025, more than a year after the recall for this matter, and Toyota has still not provided a fix.”

Should you keep driving it?

This page can't tell you that. 1 of 35 reports involved a crash and 2 people were hurt. Owners who file are the ones who had a bad experience, and nobody checks their reports. If the problem affects steering, braking, power or a fire risk, treat it as a safety fault and have it inspected before a long or high-speed drive.

File your own report with NHTSA. Complaint counts are how a problem gets an investigation.
