What it is and what to do
About 840 complaints on this site describe it, spread over about 65 model years. The Toyota Tundra from 2022 to 2025 has the most reports for a single vehicle year, followed by the 2015 Ram 1500 and the 2017 Hyundai Tucson. Owners give a median of about 30,000 miles, so this isn't only a high-mileage problem. About a third describe pressing the pedal with nothing happening for a few seconds, and about four in ten say the car lags when they pull into traffic or merge. More than a third mention pulling away from a stop, and about a quarter say the car then lurches or takes off suddenly. Roughly a quarter connect it to a recall repair, a reflash or a software update, and about one in four mention a crash or a near miss.
Modern cars don't have a cable between the pedal and the engine. A sensor reads the pedal and a computer decides how far to open the throttle. One repair guide notes that this leaves more places for a fault to hide than a cable did, since any sensor, connector or motor in the chain can delay or distort the response. It lists a dirty or failing throttle position sensor, a contaminated air-flow sensor, clogged injectors, a weak fuel pump and a restricted catalytic converter among the common causes, and says to scan for fault codes first. It also says some lag is normal on a turbocharged engine, and that lag which gets worse can point to a failing part or a boost leak. Turbos come up in only about one in sixteen of these complaints, so most owners aren't describing ordinary turbo lag.
NHTSA's files don't hold one recall for this symptom. A related one is 16V-628, which covers 2016 Hyundai Tucsons with the 7-speed dual clutch transmission: in certain driving conditions and high temperatures the vehicle may not move if the accelerator pedal is pressed and released repeatedly. Check your own VIN, since a recall for your car may describe the fault in different words.
If the delay happens in traffic, treat it as a safety problem. Leave extra gap when you pull out, and get a diagnosis rather than waiting for it to get worse. Tell the shop when it happens (cold engine, hot engine, from a stop, at speed), how long the pause lasts, whether a warning light or message appeared, and whether it started after a recall repair or software update. Only about one in twenty-five of these owners says the dealer couldn't reproduce the fault, so a written note of the date and conditions helps.
Ask the dealer whether any software update or service bulletin applies to your model, and get every visit on a repair order. The FTC says a defect reported during the warranty period must be fixed even if the warranty expires before the repair.
