Steering

Mazda North America Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2024 CX-90 vehicles. An assembly issue with the worm gear in the steering system may result in a sudden loss of power steering assist.

Risk and remedy

Risk: Loss of power steering assist while driving increases the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the spring engaging the worm gear and reapply grease to the gear teeth, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 6, 2024. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 Option 6. Mazda's number for this recall is 6524A.

Steering:Critical Fasteners

Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2024 CX-90 vehicles. Some steering and suspension bolts may be missing or improperly tightened, which can cause the steering intermediate shaft, the front anti-lock brake system wheel speed sensor harnesses, or the front upper control arms to detach, resulting in a loss of vehicle control.

Risk and remedy

Risk: A loss of vehicle control increases the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will inspect and tighten or replace the steering and suspension bolts, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 14, 2023. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 Option 6. Mazda's number for this recall is 5923F.

NHTSA summary

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 26 complaints and several Early Warning Reporting (EWR) Field Reports alleging intermittent and brief increases in steering effort (described as âsticky steeringâ) during the drive cycle in model year (MY) 2024 CX-90 vehicles manufactured by Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) subject to Recall 24V2022. In each complaint, the vehicle had the recall remedy completed prior to the reported incident. Recall 24V022 addresses a sudden and unexpected change of steering effort while driving caused by excessive worm gear friction force. After receiving the recall 24V022 remedy, consumers report sudden increases of steering effort while driving. Sudden and unexpected change of steering effort while driving may increase the risk of a crash. ODI is opening this Recall Query (RQ) to assess the adequacy of the remedy for Recall 24V022 and to identify the cause(s) of the conditions leading to the post-remedy reports. “Steering is horrible specifically to the left in a curve it doesn't go back to center when letting it you have to force it which is jerking car back right into other lane off the road. The brakes squeal awful the car has about 40,000 miles on it. Can't see any recall on any of this with my car but it definitely has issues.”

“When Iâm going around the corner, the steering feels sort of sticky and either wonât stay in one place or feels a little bit stuck in one place. It sometimes feels like someone else is making micro adjustments to the steering as Iâm holding the steering wheel. This has been happening for about the last 10,000 miles on the vehicle.”

“Repeated episodes of âstickyâ steering. Requires a lot of effort or force to move the wheel. Highly problematic in turns. Have had to yank the wheel so hard to straighten it, it caused the entire car swerve. Very dangerous. After research, appears this is a wide spread issue with this particular vehicle.”

“Steering is rough and can grab or stick when turning the wheel. Afraid it might lock up while driving. The problem has been confirmed by the Mazda dealership, and the dealer I bought it from. The vehicle has not been inspected by anyone else. No warning lamps, I noticed the problem shortly after I bought it.”
