Steering:Electric Power Assist System

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles. The vehicles may have a temporary loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist, especially during low-speed turning maneuvers.

Risk and remedy
Risk: If EPS assist is lost and then returns, the driver might lose temporary control of the steering wheel, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will update the EPS module software, free of charge. The recall began on August 10, 2017. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-432-8782. GM's number for this recall is 17276.

What owners wrote

“Electrical glitches happen at both, low speeds and while on the roadway. My steering wheel tightens up and I get a message on the dashboard “Stabilitrak” and another one “assisted steering reduced, drive with care”. My vehicle even shut off on me after pulling in to a parking space after turning steering wheel completely to one side”

“The power steering started going out and then comes back on, which is very dangerous!”

“At low speeds my power steering will cut out. Today I almost hit a guy at a gas station when my steering went dead and got stiff for a second then came back. After some research I see over a million trucks were recalled for this.”

Filed Sep 8, 2022

“Lose power steering at low speeds typically in a low speed turn. Stabilitrack warning appears on the dash and sometimes lose power to the entire dash including radio and A/C.”

Should you keep driving it?

This page can't tell you that. 3 of 77 reports involved a crash and 2 people were hurt. Owners who file are the ones who had a bad experience, and nobody checks their reports. If the problem affects steering, braking, power or a fire risk, treat it as a safety fault and have it inspected before a long or high-speed drive.

File your own report with NHTSA. Complaint counts are how a problem gets an investigation.
