The owner said that there was no prior warning or wheel related problems with the vehicle. The vehicle had been driven approximately 8,500 miles at the time of the incident. On May 29, 2015 ODI sent an information request to Ford asking for detailed information related to the specific 22 inch alloy wheel used on the Edge as well as any peer vehicles which used the same type of wheel. On July 17, 2015 Ford provided ODI with the requested information. Ford's search showed that the single incident reported to ODI is the only instance of a wheel failure on the subject or peer vehicles. The failed wheel was sent to the National Transportation Service Board (NTSB) materials analysis laboratory for examination. The NTSB determined that the wheel failed because of a severe impact that caused a crack that rapidly propagated around the circumference of the wheel, The rim fracture surface had a predominantly rough appearance consistent with an overstress fracture (rapid fracture)There were no abnormalities or unique features associated with the

What owners wrote

“My lugs nuts have expanded on my vehicle and I cannot get my wheels off. What happens if while unable to change a flat tire on the highway due to the lug nuts stuck on the the car I get hit and killed? Ford needs to accept the responsibility on this safety defect and replace the lug nuts at no charge. This has also created an issue with me being able to have my brakes checked during my oil changes.”

Filed Aug 27, 2022

“Swollen lug nuts. Unable to use supplied lug wrench on lug nuts after having a flat tire on roadway. Unable to safely remove flat while on side of road. Dealer diagnosed problem as swollen lug nuts on wheel. No warning”

Filed Aug 27, 2022

“Damaged lug nuts. Dealer told me they had to be replaced. Front are like new. Back wheel lug nuts have swelled and are starting to rust. Dealer cannot rotate my tires. My last Edge did not have this problem and it was older.”

Filed Jul 31, 2022

“When getting tires rotated found out that the lug nuts on my wheels had expanded and had to get them removed by force. Found out this has been occurring to other Ford vehicles for years. Now I have replacement lug nuts that extend too far out and if hitting a curb or something would definitely ruin the wheel. Should not be having this type of issue at my expense for faulty lug nuts.”

Should you keep driving it?

This page can't tell you that. 0 of 28 reports involved a crash. Owners who file are the ones who had a bad experience, and nobody checks their reports. If the problem affects steering, braking, power or a fire risk, treat it as a safety fault and have it inspected before a long or high-speed drive.

File your own report with NHTSA. Complaint counts are how a problem gets an investigation.
