What owners wrote
“My vehicle fails to shut off when placed in Park. â¢It fails to start properly when the ignition is engaged. â¢It experiences shifting malfunctions that directly prevent safe operation. These issues are ongoing and remain unresolved despite being well-documented in GM Technical Service Bulletin 19-NA-206 and related bulletins, which identify the root cause as a defective shifter park switch and wiring harness.”

“Vehicle stalls at lights and in traffic because of the START / STOP system GM has put in this 2019 Malibu. This is dangerous as the vehicle moves if on incline (sometimes backwards). There is no control. The vehicle then has to be shifted into PARK and then restarted. THIS HAPPENED July of 2024 and August 2025”

“Shift to park sensor does not recognize the vehicle is in park. I am unable to shut off or lock my vehicle. Ongoing prior to ownership.”

“Gear shift does not register the vehicle is in park. Intermittent âShift to Parkâ warning displays - the car will not shut off. It drains the battery. Jiggling the shift knob and button can help to get the car to register it is in park, but this is unreliable.”

Should you keep driving it?
This page can't tell you that. 1 of 52 reports involved a crash and 2 people were hurt. Owners who file are the ones who had a bad experience, and nobody checks their reports. If the problem affects steering, braking, power or a fire risk, treat it as a safety fault and have it inspected before a long or high-speed drive.
File your own report with NHTSA. Complaint counts are how a problem gets an investigation.
