What it is and what to do
What is usually involved
Owners name the fuel injectors, the high-pressure fuel pump, the fuel filter and the diesel particulate filter. Fueleconomy.gov credits modern diesels' gains in power and efficiency partly to improved fuel injection and electronic engine control, and notes that today's diesels have to meet the same emissions standards as gasoline vehicles, which is what the particulate filter and other exhaust treatment are for.
What a shop checks first
Delphi's technical guidance is to test a fuel system for pressure, volume and electrical integrity before condemning a pump, and to compare each reading with the manufacturer's specification. Injectors get their own tests. Delphi, which makes common-rail injectors, publishes a leak test that smaller shops can run with an electrical meter when they don't have a flow bench. Ask the shop what test it used to single out an injector before agreeing to replace a set.
When to stop driving
A fuel smell inside the cab, visible fuel leaking, or a loss of power at speed are reasons to stop and get the truck inspected. A particulate filter warning is less urgent, and your owner's manual explains what the truck expects you to do when it lights up.
What to tell the mechanic
Say where you last filled up and whether the problem started right after. Describe what happened: stalling, loss of power, hard starting, smoke or smell. List any recall notices you've received, and bring the letter. If the truck tows, give the weight and how often.
Recalls, bulletins and warranty
Look up your VIN on NHTSA's recall page. A recall repair is free, and when parts are short the manufacturer's letter should include interim safety guidance, which NHTSA asks owners to follow until the fix is done. Parts of the fuel and exhaust treatment system also fall under the federal emissions warranty: EPA says emission-related parts, including fuel metering, are covered for 2 years or 24,000 miles, and the catalytic converter and engine computer for 8 years or 80,000 miles. Bulletins for known diesel problems are filed with NHTSA and appear in the same search.
