Brake fluid leaks or a brake line bursts

Wagner Brake says brake fluid looks light yellow to brown and leaves a slippery residue on your finger. It lists brake lines that rust and pit from weather and road exposure, worn components that break cylinder seals, fittings that loosen from vibration, and damaged cylinders or reservoirs as common causes. Its warning signs are spots under the car near the wheels and a soft pedal, or one that suddenly behaves differently. Its advice is not to drive with a compromised brake system, and to have a mechanic inspect at once if you suspect a leak, because lost fluid reduces stopping ability.

About 590 complaints on this site fit. The median is about 74,000 miles, so this is mostly a mid-life problem. Ford supplies about eight in ten of them, with the 2017 and 2016 Edge, the 2015 Fusion and the F-150 leading. About one in five mention a warning light, nearly half say the pedal went to the floor, and about three in ten say a line or hose burst. About a third mention a brake hose and four in ten mention a recall. About one in twenty-five mention a crash or collision.

NHTSA has several cases, all on specific vehicles. Ford recalls 20V-469 and 25V-544 cover 2015 to 2018 Edge and 2016 to 2018 Lincoln MKX: front brake hoses that may rupture prematurely, then a rear brake jounce hose that may rupture and leak fluid. NHTSA's PE24-027 looked at rear brake hose ruptures causing sudden loss of braking on 2015 to 2017 Edges and closed in October 2025 with recall 25V-544. For the Fusion and Lincoln MKZ, recall 23V-162 covers 2013 to 2018 models whose front brake hoses may rupture and leak brake fluid, following investigation RQ22-004, which started from 50 owner reports of front jounce hose ruptures. Hyundai recall 23V-651 covers ABS modules on many 2010 to 2015 models that may leak brake fluid internally and cause an electrical short.

If the pedal sinks, the low-fluid light comes on, or you find fluid at a wheel, don't count on topping it up and driving on. Wagner's advice is to have it inspected at once. Tell the shop when you last added fluid and how much, where the spot is, and whether the pedal feels different at a stop or at speed. Say so if it leaks only in a certain position, such as parked on an incline, as one Jeep Wagoneer owner reports.

Check your VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. The Ford hose recalls above are repaired free of charge, and the rear hose recall follows the earlier front hose ones, so ask the dealer about both. If no recall applies, get it on a repair order; the FTC says a defect reported during the warranty period must be fixed even if the warranty expires before the repair.
