Misfire on other Sorento years
Report counts are for each model year on its own, so a newer car has had less time to collect them. Model years with too few reports of it for a sheet: 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025.
What this problem usually is
These reports start with the check engine light. Many describe the engine running rough or shaking at idle, a P0300-series code, or a catalytic converter code. A worrying number say the light was flashing. Owners often list ignition coils or spark plugs already replaced, and the light coming back afterward.
What got replaced
Owners who name the part that was replaced mention the sensor (18 reports), the spark plugs (13 reports), the ignition coils (4 reports) and the catalytic converter (4 reports).
Recalls and investigations
2 recalls on the engine cover the 2017 model year. A recall on the same system isn't always the same failure, so read the defect text.
The high pressure fuel pipe that connects to the fuel pump outlet may have been damaged, misaligned or improperly torqued during the engine replacement procedure, possibly causing a fuel leak.
The engine crankshaft may have been improperly heat treated and may fail.

“Check engine light came on, oil light came on after, vehicle stalled on expressway. Engine is knocking.”

“Check engine light came on. 65,000 miles with documented regular maintenance. Took to dealership where i purchased the vehicle new. Engine code (P0172). Was told gas was getting into the oil and i would need a new high pressure fuel pump. This is a common issue and should be repaired free of cost.”

“Excessive oil consumption causing engine to misfire- needing spark plugs replaced with low mileage. Adding 2 quarts of oil about every 700 miles. With no solution given to correct issue.”
Filed Dec 19, 2022
“2017 kia Sorento has been burning oil like crazy. It is going through at least 3 quarts of oil every week to 2 weeks. The oil light does not come on to say it is low on oil, I have to continually check oil level manually to see if I need to add oil. Check engine light comes on and goes back out constantly. Biggest problem is there is no indication that the oil is getting low.”

Should you keep driving it?
This page can't tell you that. 0 of 99 reports involved a crash. Owners who file are the ones who had a bad experience, and nobody checks their reports. If the problem affects steering, braking, power or a fire risk, treat it as a safety fault and have it inspected before a long or high-speed drive.
File your own report with NHTSA. Complaint counts are how a problem gets an investigation. How reports land on this sheet.
