Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2016 Dodge Journey, Jeep Compass, and Jeep Patriot vehicles manufactured May 9, 2016, to July 15, 2016. The crankshaft or camshaft sensor may only work intermittently, causing the engine to stall.

Risk and remedy
Risk: If the engine stalls, there is an increased the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the crankshaft or camshaft sensor connector, free of charge. The recall began February 8, 2017. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S89.

On December 13, 2016, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) received recall 16V-907 from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) that identified a safety defect involving crankshaft or camshaft sensor failures on certain 2016 Model Year Dodge Journey, Jeep Compass, and Jeep Patriot vehicles. The failure of the crankshaft or camshaft sensor may lead to a loss of motive power (LOMP) in the recalled vehicles. Following the receipt of recall 16V-907, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) received 127 vehicle owner’s questionnaires (VOQ), in which consumers allege experiencing crankshaft or camshaft failures on similar vehicles not included in the recall. On July 22, 2022, this Recall Query was opened to further assess the scope, frequency, and safety consequences of the alleged defect described in the recall. During this investigation, ODI sent two information request (IR) letters to FCA. The first letter was sent on August 15, 2022, and the second on July 12, 2024. Responses to these IR letters, that included manufacturer claim data related to the alleged defect, were received on September 26, 2022, and September 6, 2024, respectively. Analysis of ODI and FCA claim data identified two failure modes relating to intermittent crankshaft and camshaft sensor loss of signal. In a letter dated April 3, 2013, Chrysler Group LLC submitted a Defect Information Report (DIR) to NHTSA identifying a safety defect in the fuel delivery system in approximately 20,532 model year (MY) 2012 Jeep Patriot (11,624) and Compass (8,908) vehicles manufactured from October 18, 2011 through May 7, 2012 and equipped with certain fuel tanks produced between October 18, 2011 and January 26, 2012 (Recall 13V-120).According to Chrysler, Jeep Patriot and Compass vehicles equipped with saddle type fuel tanks built during the affected period may experience low siphoning rate through the transfer tube from the secondary to the primary side of the fuel tank.Chrysler's investigation determined that a material change by the transfer tube supplier (TI Automotive) led to malformed tubes being shipped to the final tank assembly supplier (Kautex).The malformed transfer tubes may make the siphoning process more difficult to start and maintain under certain operating conditions.Sustained driving during this condition may deplete fuel in the primary side of the fuel tank and lead to engine stall without warning.Kautex established a 100% sort on January 26, 2012 as a countermeasure for the malformed tubes being used in production.Chrysler is able to trace fuel tank build dates by vehicle identification number and Recall 13V-120 only includes vehicles equipped withsaddle tanks made during the affected period.Approximately 97 percent of the recalled Patriot vehicles (11,277 out of 11,624)

“The crankshaft or cam shaft sensor is malfunctioning and my engine stalls while I am driving. This has happened about 10 times now. I found a recall for this issue on 2016 Jeep Patriots, but my VIN does not come up with any recalls. I believe this recall needs to be expanded.”

“Vehicles stalls during driving. Fault code relates to crankshaft sensor. Other vehicles from same year have been recalled but this vehicle was not included. Vehicle has stalled at highway speed numerous times.”

“After filling up vehicle (not overfilled) it stalls when I come to a stop or slow down for a turn. This just started today after filling up from the same fuel station I always use. The Jeep restarts after a few seconds after turning it completely off.”

“Vehicle will stall at any speed without warning when letting go of gas pedal. Check engine light will come on once out of every 3-4 stalls with an engine code pointing to Crankshaft Position Sensor. VIN is not part of recall group however experiencing identical symptoms.”
