Recalls and investigations

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2021-2022 Bronco Sport and Escape vehicles. The rear brake linings may have been manufactured incorrectly, which can affect braking performance. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 135, "Light Vehicle Brake Systems."

Risk and remedy
Risk: During certain situations, the driver may have to apply more brake pedal force, and the distance required to stop the vehicle may be extended, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the front brake pads, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 17, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 21C31.

What owners wrote

“Vehicle brought in for Brake Recall at 11k miles. After service completed, vehicle has a loud screech when vehicle is in reverse or in a tight turn radius. No warning lamps or symptoms before this issue occurred. Vehicle is being brought back to dealership for further inspection.”

“When coming to a stop and pressing on the breaks it periodically will make s sound and then there is about a 2O SEC DELAY before coming to complete stop. If I am driving downhill the delay is longer. This scares my since I drive over 100 miles a day for work. I have reached out to FORD and the manufacture and they still do not have a fix to the issue.”

Filed Aug 9, 2022

“Loud screeching noise when backing up, seems to be harder to stop when applying brakes when needed to make a quick stop, been to dealer and he told me that the noise was normal! And couldn’t duplicate the reduced braking issue!”

Filed May 10, 2022

“When going in reverse loud grueling noises occur. When driving forward abnormal noises occurs but this noise is not consistent. I do need to apply more than normal braking while stopping. I took my vehicle in to have service look at it at the dealership but they stated there was nothing wrong.”

Should you keep driving it?

This page can't tell you that. 6 of 125 reports involved a crash and 5 people were hurt. Owners who file are the ones who had a bad experience, and nobody checks their reports. If the problem affects steering, braking, power or a fire risk, treat it as a safety fault and have it inspected before a long or high-speed drive.

File your own report with NHTSA. Complaint counts are how a problem gets an investigation.
