Recalls and investigations

One recall on the brakes covers the 2019 model year. A recall on the same system isn't always the same failure, so read the defect text.

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Toyota Tacoma vehicles. Improper machining of the brake master cylinder may result in internal damage of one of the seals, affecting brake performance.

Risk and remedy
Risk: Reduced brake performance can lengthen the distance needed to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake master cylinder, free of charge. The recall began January 28, 2019. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's numbers for this recall are J16/J06.

“Brake fluid leaking into driver-side floorboard. Due to leak in brake master cylinder seal. Recalls have been issued for same year and model, but my truck is not included. I assume mine has a different manufacturing date. Yet my truck has the same problem as those with the recall.”

Should you keep driving it?

This page can't tell you that. 5 of 56 reports involved a crash and 2 people were hurt. Owners who file are the ones who had a bad experience, and nobody checks their reports. If the problem affects steering, braking, power or a fire risk, treat it as a safety fault and have it inspected before a long or high-speed drive.

File your own report with NHTSA. Complaint counts are how a problem gets an investigation.
