What is your 3500 doing?

Each one opens a sheet built from the owner reports of that problem on the 2022 model year.

Is the 2022 Ram 3500 reliable?

The 2022 Ram 3500 has 189 owner complaints on file with NHTSA, close to the median of 185 for 2022 pickups on this site. Of the 13 3500 model years since 2014, it has the 3rd most complaints. Complaint counts rise with sales as well as faults, so read what owners report below before deciding.

At a glance

Next to the 2021 and 2023
The 2022 stands out from the model years on either side. It draws 38 complaints for each year on the road, while the 2021 draws 10 and the 2023 4.
Top problem
Transmission failure leads with 51 of the 189 complaints (27%), ahead of transmission shudder at 27. Transmission failure tends to show up early. Of the 24 owners who gave a mileage for it, half were under about 10,000 miles and a quarter under about 3,000.
Crash, fire and injury reports
10 of the 189 complaints (5%) report a crash, a fire or an injury, about the 6% typical of vehicles on this site. Counted separately (one report can carry more than one), 4 reports mention a crash, 5 mention a fire and 7 people were hurt.
Recalls behind the top problems
transmission failure and transmission shudder all have recalls on the same system, and the same campaigns cover them: 22V-835. A recall on the same system doesn't always cover the failure owners describe, so compare its summary with the complaints.
When owners filed
Filings jumped in 2023, with 99 complaints, 2.2 times the next busiest year. So far in 2026, 19 more have come in.

When each problem shows up

Each bar covers the middle half of the mileages owners reported for that problem. A quarter saw it earlier, a quarter later. The tick is the median. Most reported: transmission fails or needs replacement, 51 complaints.

        Median 2022 model here (78 vehicles)182
        Median 2022 pickup here (17)185

189 complaints is about the median for a 2022 model on this site and about the median for a 2022 pickup. Among the 9 3500 model years here it ranks 3rd for complaints. Counts follow sales volume as much as reliability, so a truck that sells 700,000 a year draws more reports than a sedan that sells 200,000.

Service bulletins for the 2022 Ram 3500

Ram filed 583 bulletins and other notices with NHTSA that list the 2022 Ram 3500. 68 of them deal with a problem owners have reported on this car. Newest first.

Federal rules make a manufacturer send NHTSA a copy of any notice about a defect that goes to more than one dealer or owner. Most of these are service bulletins, the repair instructions manufacturers send to dealers. NHTSA generally leaves safety recall bulletins out of this file, and recalls are listed separately.

Loss of power steering assist. Open.

        NHTSA summary
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 19 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) alleging an intermittent or complete failure of the power steering assist system in certain Model Year (MY) 2022-2023 RAM ProMaster 1500, 2500, and 3500 vehicles. Failure of the power steering assist system can result in increased steering effort required to control the vehicle. An increase in steering effort can potentially lead to a loss of directional control of the vehicle. Several received reports allege failures of the steering rack with specific reports citing water intrusion into the electrical connectors of the electric power steering control module. ODI is opening this Preliminary Evaluation (PE) to assess the scope and root cause of potential defects in 2022-2023 RAM ProMaster steering systems. To review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

2022 ram transmission snap ring failure. Open.

        NHTSA summary
The Office of Defect Investigations (ODI) has received 82 complaints alleging loss of motive power due to an internal transmission failure of the K1 snap ring in model year 2022 Ram 3500, 4500, and 5500 vehicles. Of these complaints, 16 describe a complete loss of motive power at speeds greater than 25 miles per hour, without the ability for the vehicle to resume normal operation. The subject vehicles can be up-fit as an ambulance and other emergency response vehicle or may be heavily loaded when used for towing. During the failure event, the snap ring becomes dislodged and forward gears 1-4 are no longer functional, potentially leaving the vehicle disabled in or near the roadway and/or negatively affect the emergency mission. ODI contacted the manufacturer, FCA US, LLC d/b/a Stellantis North America (FCA), and learned that technical service bulletin (TSB) TSB-21-002-23 is related to the alleged defect condition. Additionally, FCA has conducted dynamometer and field testing and has explained to ODI that during the event a warning message will display to the operator, and gear 5 and reverse will remain available. ODI is opening this Preliminary Evaluation (PE) to evaluate the severity of the potential problem and to fully assess the potential safety-related problems. To review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.
