Electrical System:Propulsion System:Traction Battery

Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2022-2024 EV6 and 2024 EV9 vehicles. The high voltage battery cells may contain misaligned electrodes, which can lead to a fire while parked or driving.

Risk and remedy
Risk: A fire increases the risk of injury.
Remedy: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures and limit their charge to a maximum of 80% until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the high voltage battery system assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 7, 2026. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC375. NHTSA investigations into the electrical system on the EV6

PE23-012opened Jul 3, 2023
Electrical · model years 2022

Loss of motive power. Closed apr 17, 2024, led to recall 24V-200.

NHTSA summary
On July 3, 2023, the Office of Defect Investigation (ODI) opened PE23012 to investigate allegations of loss of motor power on model year (MY) 2022 Kia EV6 vehicles. Some consumers reported loss of motor power immediately after warning lamp illumination or reduction of motive power while the vehicle was in motion. This investigation found that the Integrated Charing Unit (ICCU) may become damaged over time from transient high voltage and thermal cycling. A damaged ICCU may not be able to charge the 12-volt battery which can discharge gradually while driving with a reduction of motive power. The vehicle could eventually experience a complete loss of motive power thereby increasing the risk of a crash. On July 13, 2023, Kia conducted a service campaign to inspect the ICCU and install an improved over-current detection software logic in certain 2022-2023 EV6 vehicles. On March 15, 2024, Kia filed recall 24V-200 for 48,232 MY 2022-2024 Kia EV6 vehicles. The recall remedy provides an inspection of the ICCU, and if necessary, a replacement of the ICCU and the associated fuse. The ICCU software reduces the risk of overcurrent and implements voltage peak reduction at the end of EV battery charging. The recall also includes a software update that revises the electric water pump operational threshold to reduce thermal loading during charging and driving. In view of the recall action being taken by Kia, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation. The agency reserves the right to take add

Pedestrian alert sounds. Closed aug 7, 2023, led to recall 22V-063.

NHTSA summary
NHTSA received a petition on or about July 18, 2022, requesting that Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the United States. The petition can be reviewed at NHTSA.gov under ODI Number 11486072. FMVSS 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 KG or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after March 1, 2021.On January 27, 2023, NHTSA opened Defect Petition (DP) 22-005 to evaluate the subject matter described in the petition. On June 24, 2023 and as supplemented on June 25, 2023, the petitioner notified NHTSA he was withdrawing his petition. The petitioner indicated that, based on his review of data, there is no justification for asserting potential benefits that could be derived from actions sought by my petition. Based on the petitioner's withdrawal, DP22-005 is closed. Closure of this DP does not represent a determination by NHTSA regarding the subject matter of the petition.

None of these investigations covers the 2023 model year.

What owners wrote

“1st instance: Battery Coolant errors that occurred on and off. 2nd instance: The ICCU unit failed and car was not able to charge via level 2 and only fast charge. Car was still operable. Dealer replaced ICCU 3rd instance: The ICCU failed and car was rendered inoperable. Dealer Replaced ICCU. We are now on our third ICCU since we purchased the car in 11/26/2022. This would be considered a lemon law”

“Pulling out of garage, car warned of limited speed and then within about 30 seconds completely shut down-- could not move, operate locks, etc. Car could not be started again and had to be towed away. 12v battery had been drained down to 4v due to failure of ICCU unit. Dealership replaced entire ICCU unit and fuse.”

“Got a Check electrical system error, car reduced speed and 12v battery stopped charging. Car was towed to the dealership and they confirmed that the ICCU needed to be replaced.”

Filed Jan 8, 2026

“Car said there was a 12V low battery danger and said to pull over immediately while driving. After taking it to the dealership, they said my ICCU went out. So they had to replace it. I've read that the ICCU on these cars are notorious for failing and needing replacement.”

Should you keep driving it?

This page can't tell you that. 0 of 43 reports involved a crash. Owners who file are the ones who had a bad experience, and nobody checks their reports. If the problem affects steering, braking, power or a fire risk, treat it as a safety fault and have it inspected before a long or high-speed drive.

File your own report with NHTSA. Complaint counts are how a problem gets an investigation.
