What is your Yukon XL doing?

Each one opens a sheet built from the owner reports of that problem on the 2021 model year.

Is the 2021 GMC Yukon XL reliable?

The 2021 GMC Yukon XL has 226 owner complaints on file with NHTSA, close to the median of 216 for 2021 SUVs on this site. Of the 13 Yukon XL model years since 2014, it has the 2nd most complaints. Complaint counts rise with sales as well as faults, so read what owners report below before deciding.

At a glance

Next to the 2020 and 2022
At 38 complaints for each year on the road, the 2021 runs 5.6 times the 2020 (7) and close to the 2022 (34).
Top problem
One problem takes up much of the file: engine failure, named in 86 of the 226 complaints (38%). A quarter of the 36 owners who gave a mileage for engine failure saw it by about 35,000 miles, and half by about 66,000.
Crash, fire and injury reports
Only 5 of the 226 complaints (2%) report a crash, a fire or an injury, well under the 6% typical of vehicles on this site. Counted separately (one report can carry more than one), 2 reports mention a crash, 1 mentions a fire and 5 people were hurt.
Recalls behind the top problems
engine failure, stalling and misfire all have recalls on the same system, and the same campaigns cover them: 25V-274. A recall on the same system doesn't always cover the failure owners describe, so compare its summary with the complaints.
When owners filed
Filings jumped in 2025, with 109 complaints, 6.8 times the next busiest year. So far in 2026, 72 more have come in.

226 complaints is 1.2 times the median 2021 model on this site and about the median for a 2021 SUV. Among the 7 Yukon XL model years here it ranks 2nd for complaints. Counts follow sales volume as much as reliability, so a truck that sells 700,000 a year draws more reports than a sedan that sells 200,000.

Service bulletins for the 2021 GMC Yukon XL

GMC filed 1,232 bulletins and other notices with NHTSA that list the 2021 GMC Yukon XL. 48 of them deal with a problem owners have reported on this car. Newest first.

Federal rules make a manufacturer send NHTSA a copy of any notice about a defect that goes to more than one dealer or owner. Most of these are service bulletins, the repair instructions manufacturers send to dealers. NHTSA generally leaves safety recall bulletins out of this file, and recalls are listed separately.

        NHTSA summary
On April 9, 2021, the Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) opened PE21-010 to investigate instances of air bag malfunction indicator light (MIL) illumination and potential for frontal air bag non-deployment in several vehicles manufactured by General Motors (GM). The vehicles included model year (MY) 2020 through 2021 CT4 and CT5 passenger cars, Sierra and Silverado trucks (1500/2500/3500 models), XT4 and MY 2021 Escalade, Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon SUVs.Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 21-NA-005, issued in March 2021, addresses air bag MIL illumination with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) B0001-1B or B0012-0D. It cites rust particles in the connection terminal interface of the driver air bag inflator housing as the cause of the air bag MIL illumination. Illumination of the air bag MIL under these circumstances may result in a non-deployment of the frontal driver air bag during a frontal collision and increased risk of injury to the driver.GM stated a correlation exists between production delays due to the pandemic shutdown and premature corrosion initiation on the surface of the air bag inflator housing, which, in some cases, caused rust development during a seven (7) month period of vehicle production. In the rare instance when a rust particle dislodges from the driver air bag inflator housing and enters the air bag connector prior to assembly, an intermittent resistance spike at the air bag connector may result. The condition generates excessive resistance in the air bag ele
