Recalls and investigations

One recall on the brakes covers the 2020 model year. A recall on the same system isn't always the same failure, so read the defect text.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020 Chevrolet Equinox vehicles. The rear brake calipers may have been produced with an incorrect lubricant, potentially causing the rubber seals to swell and the brakes to drag.

Risk and remedy
Risk: Brake drag may result in overheating of the brake pads, affecting the braking ability and increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear brake calipers, including the brake hose gasket, brake fluid and wheel to hub lubricant, free of charge. The recall began October 29, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438. GM's number for this recall is N192270920.

When it happens

The middle half of failures fell between 29,133 and 111,000 miles, from the 10 reports that gave a mileage.

What owners wrote

“Brakes went stiff and hard to push no warning light. I was driving on the interstate with my daughter. Was stuck out of town with no breaks.”

Filed Jul 10, 2026

“Hit my brakes and had nothing but a hard pedal NO BRAKES AT ALL! This almost caused a major accident being speed limit is 70 and I could not stop the car. There was no warning light until I shut it off and turned it back on then lights blinked and said brake assist failure then the warning disappeared once again. This is very scary and I cannot believe there were other reports and nothing has been recalled.”

Filed Feb 26, 2024

“The brake assist warning light flashed and the electric components start blinking and the car went in reverse in traffic. The car then turnt off.”

Should you keep driving it?

This page can't tell you that. 1 of 25 reports involved a crash. Owners who file are the ones who had a bad experience, and nobody checks their reports. If the problem affects steering, braking, power or a fire risk, treat it as a safety fault and have it inspected before a long or high-speed drive.

File your own report with NHTSA. Complaint counts are how a problem gets an investigation.
